DEAR MISS MANNERS: I am over 65, single, and enjoy dining out. I realize that I’m not young anymore, but I still take a lot of offense at being addressed in a condescending manner by female waitstaff, who use terms such as “honey” while talking to me. JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was released from the hospital Monday after an emergency heart procedure and now faces an unprecedented national crisis ahead of parliament’s vote on the first major piece of legislation to remake the country’s justice system.Demonstrators, many of whom feel the very foundations of their country are being eroded by the government’s plan, stepped up their opposition, blocking a road leading up to parliament. Businesses shuttered their doors in protest at the vote.Driven by a governing coalition made up of ultranationalist and ultra-religious parties, the judicial overhaul has divided Israel, testing the delicate social ties that bind the country, rattling the cohesion of its powerful military and repeatedly drawing concern from even its closest ally, the United States.Efforts to find a last-ditch compromise were underway, with President Isaac Herzog shuttling between the sides, including a meeting at the hospital where ...Germany players commit some of their Women’s World Cup bonuses to grassroots programs

SYDNEY (AP) — Money has been a big talking point at this Women’s World Cup, from the lack of federation support for some teams and players, to the smaller prize pool FIFA is offering compared with the men’s World Cup in 2022, to the players not being paid their World Cup bonuses directly. Ahead of its opening match Monday versus Morocco in Melbourne, two-time World Cup champion Germany tried to spread some good news about finances in the women’s game. The national team players announced they will donate a percentage of their World Cup bonuses to grassroots girls soccer organizations in Germany. “It was important for us that if we donate to these projects, that the money actually reaches the grassroots; that was our key aspect,” midfielder Svenja Huth said. The Germany players are partnering with Common Goal to contribute to inclusive girls’ and non-binary soccer programs.“One of the hallmarks of our team (is) that we are aware of social shortages,” Huth said. “We want gender equality...Cristiana Girelli’s goal gives Italy 1-0 win over Argentina at the Women’s World Cup

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Cristiana Girelli’s goal in the 87th minute broke a stalemate and Italy kicked off the Women’s World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Argentina on Monday night. Italy put the ball in the back of the net twice in the opening half but both times were offside, before Girelli’s breakthrough header. Girelli came into the match as a substitute in the 83rd minute. The Italians have never dropped an opening match at the World Cup. But this time they faced tenacious Argentina, eager for its first-ever win in the tournament. Going into the World Cup, La Albiceleste were inspired by their men’s side and star Lionel Messi, who brought home the World Cup trophy from Qatar late last year. Italy has had more success on the big stage, advancing to the World Cup quarterfinals in 2019 after a 2-0 round of 16 victory over China. The Italians were stopped by the Netherlands, which went on to lose to the United States in the final. Argentina had a boistero...150 empresas israelíes líderes se declaran en huelga mientras el controvertido proyecto de ley se somete a votación

PARIS — Liberté. Egalité. But mostly: sécurité. It all started with Napoléon Bonaparte. Over two centuries, France cobbled together a surveillance apparatus capable of intercepting private communications; keeping traffic and localization data for up to a year; storing people’s fingerprints; and monitoring most of the territory with cameras. This system, which has faced pushback from digital rights organizations and United Nations experts, will get its spotlight moment at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. In July next year, France will deploy large-scale, real-time, algorithm-supported video surveillance cameras — a first in Europe. (Not included in the plan: facial recognition.) Last month, the French parliament approved a controversial government plan to allow investigators to track suspected criminals in real-time via access to their devices’ geolocation, camera and microphone. Paris also lobbied in Brussels to be allowed to spy on reporters in the name of national security...Latest news
