AUSTIN (KXAN) – A group supporting Palestinians rallied at the Texas State Capitol Sunday, more than a day after Hamas launched its attack on Israel. A rally member told KXAN that they were surprised by Saturday morning's attack and condemn the loss of life. More than 1,000 people have died since the attack began, according to reporting from NBC News."We're here to support the freedom of the Palestinian people which is the freedom to live, the freedom to have basic human rights. We need to understand that the Palestinians are the victim here. They're not the aggressor. They are acting, as you can hear, when land is occupied, resistance is justified, said Asaad Kawach.

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The war between Israel and Hamas has impacted the Israeli community in Central Texas. Rabbi Daniel Septimus, chief executive officer of Shalom Austin, spoke to KXAN about the feelings he and his congregation have right now. "It's just unprecedented what we're seeing happening in Israel. And this is taking place on the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, which was also a surprise attack, except this attack in particular was done in ways that really affected the civilians and towns throughout the southern part of Israel," Septimus said. "So, that part is even more challenging and more tragic than what was taking place before where there were attacks on soldiers, and less on civilians. This was a premeditated attack on innocent civilians." "Right now peace should always be on our minds," he added. "We should always be thinking about it, but peace is far away. Right now, we have to find a partner who's willing to make peace, and we do not have a partner currently on ...

Have Denver food halls hit their peak?

Published Mon, 10 Mar 2025 07:50:26 GMT

For the past 10 years, since The Source introduced the concept of food halls to Denver, diners have filled them up, looking for the latest ideas from hot chefs or restaurants. Take Meta Asian Kitchen (now called MAKfam), which started at Avanti Food & Beverage before moving out to open a standalone spot, or The Budlong, which drew enormous lines at The Source before expanding in Denver. Currently, Black Box Bakery in Edgewater Public Market has gained a huge following, as has Lunchboxx at Denver Central Market. These days, the 20 or so food halls in metro Denver range in style, vibe and price point, and include Avanti, Edgewater Public Market, Denver Central Market, Zeppelin Station, Stanley Marketplace, Freedom Social, Grange Hall and the Golden Mill. Opinion: Prop. HH is a tax increase that wrecks our Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights

Editor’s note: This column is part of a pro-con about the Proposition HH which will appear on the ballot for the November 7 election. Faced with an average 40% property assessment increase, taxpayers across the state know they will be hit with a tax spike that will be at best burdensome. For many, it will be an intolerable strain on the family budget. That is why it is crucial voters are provided with a candid, thorough analysis of all the details. Let’s look beyond advocates’ specious claims that this is only about local property tax relief – with not even enough money thrown in to backfill local government revenue. The facts are far diff...

Editor’s note: This column is part of a pro-con about the Proposition HH which will appear on the ballot for the November 7 election. Read the opposing view here.Another election is just around the corner, and even though we may not be voting for president or senator, we will be voting on a measure that will affect Coloradans for the next decade. The current housing crisis is being fueled by unprecedented increases in population and a housing inventory that has not been able to keep up with demand. As a result, homes that were worth $250,000 in the suburbs of Denver are now worth close to a million dollars – and property taxes are not exempt from this dramatic increase.A few months ago, Colorado homeowners, including myself, were shocked to receive their new property tax assessment – it even sparked a movement of homeowners asking their municipality to lower their property tax. This added expense left many homeowners worried about being able to afford to stay in their homes, es...
