Christine Tierney said she was out for her usual walk on Lincoln Circle with her dog Oscar on Tuesday when she noticed he started acting strangely.Tierney said Oscar let out a scream, stumbled out into the street, and was acting dazed. “50 volts could be potentially fatal to a human being,” Tierney said, noting her dog suffered a 90-volt shock. And Tierney said National Grid told her it was not an uncommon situation.“When I asked was this a freak event, did we get really unlucky? The comment was, you’d be surprised at how often this happens.” Tierney is now warning other dog owners to be aware that this danger is out there.National Grid says they have replaced the handhole and is inspecting others. In a statement, the utility company said, “National Grid crews responded immediately and made the needed repairs. Gerrit Cole overpowered the Royals early and DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton provided late power at the plate as three of the Yankees’ biggest stars led the way in a 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon.LeMahieu lifted a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning that proved to be the difference, breaking a 2-2 tie in the Bronx and continuing a second-half surge for the two-time batting champion.LeMahieu’s .232 average this season is .61 points below his career mark, but he has 10 hits in 29 at-bats since the All-Star break, which he attributes to an adjustment involving “a little bit of everything” in his approach.“Some stuff I was working on right before the break, I kind of took it into the break and just was really excited to get back after the break and get after it,” LeMahieu said after Saturday’s game. “Now I feel like I’m on the right track.”Stanton added a two-run blast in the eighth inning to complete the Yankees’ ...Teen girl dies in Cape Cod boat crash off beach in Dennis

TEMECULA, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California school board has voted to approve a social studies curriculum for elementary students, resolving a dispute with Gov. Gavin Newsom over lesson plans that mentioned the state’s first openly gay elected public official. The Temecula Valley Unified School District had previously voted to reject the curriculum in part because some board members were concerned the curriculum’s supplementary material mentioned Harvey Milk, the former San Francisco supervisor and gay rights advocate who was assassinated in 1978. Some board members also said parents had not been adequately consulted about the curriculum.Rejecting the curriculum meant the district would have to use a textbook published in 2006. Those textbooks do not comply with a 2011 state law that requires schools to teach students about the historical contributions of gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. Newsom, a Democrat who has often sparred with Republicans in other states o...Hun Sen is the longest serving leader in Asia. He’s purged critics and is set to win Cambodian polls

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Cambodians go to the polls Sunday with incumbent Prime Minister Hun Sen and his party all but assured a landslide victory thanks to the effective suppression and intimidation of any real opposition that critics say has made a farce of democracy in the Southeast Asian nation. The longest-serving leader in Asia, Hun Sen has steadily consolidated power with his strongarm tactics over the last 38 years. But, at age 70, he has suggested he will hand off the premiership during the upcoming five-year term to his oldest son, Hun Manet, perhaps as early as the first month after the elections. Hun Manet, 45, has a bachelor’s from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point as well as a master’s from NYU and a Ph.D. from Bristol University in Britain. He is currently chief of Cambodia’s army.Despite his Western education, however, observers don’t expect any immediate shifts in policy from that of his father, who has steadily drawn Cambodia closer...The fight over Alabama’s congressional redistricting now shifts back to federal court

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Standing at an Alabama Statehouse microphone before lawmakers voted on new congressional districts, state Rep. Chris England said that change in the Deep South state has often happened only through federal court order. The Democratic lawmaker accused Republicans of repeating history and flouting a judicial mandate to create a second majority-Black district in the state or “something quite close to it.”“Alabama does what Alabama does. Ultimately, what we are hoping for, I guess, at some point, is that the federal court does what it always does to Alabama: Forces us to the right thing. Courts always have to come in and save us from ourselves,” said England, a Black lawmaker from Tuscaloosa. The fight over whether Alabama’s congressional map complies with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 now shifts back to federal court as state Republicans submit their new plan to the same three-judge panel that struck down the previous districts. The outcome could have conse...Cicero sets up recovery center as town officials try to address flood problems

CICERO, Ill. — Thousands of residents in the western suburbs are still dealing with heavy flood damage from thunderstorms that struck Chicagoland earlier this month. Cicero, Berwyn and other local municipalities are trying to accelerate the help needed by local residents, but the shear number of flood report forms and other issues caused by the storm have proven difficult to handle.Numerous residents turned out Saturday at the Flooding Recovery Resource Center set up by town officials in Cicero, looking for help with just that—processing food report forms and getting their homes cleaned up. Suburban elementary school employee accused of distributing child pornography Angelina Hernandez, a single mother who lives in Cicero, described to WGN the challenge of dealing with the flooding that was experienced throughout the western suburban town in early July."I have to fix all of that, plus the smell," Hernandez said, referencing the state of her Cicero home. "I was just looking to see ...Latest news
