DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Kuwait’s crown prince has ordered its parliament again dissolved and new elections for the country after a court decision reinstated lawmakers from 2020. Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmed Al Jaber made the announcement Monday in an address to the nation as the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan draws to an end this week. He called the decision the will of the Kuwaiti people, according to the state-run KUNA news agency. Elections were scheduled within the next two months. That briefly reinstated the former lawmakers. Kuwait has the freest and most active assembly among the Gulf Arab states, but political power is still largely concentrated in the hands of the ruling Al Sabah family, which appoints the prime minister and Cabinet, and can dissolve the assembly at any time. Meanwhile, p...

Eastern Europeans face Brussels backlash over Ukraine grain bans

European Union politicians and officials have rounded on the front-line Eastern states of Poland, Hungary and Slovakia for imposing import bans on Ukrainian farm produce, denouncing the curbs as illegal and counterproductive. The three countries banned imports of Ukrainian grain and other food products over recent days, arguing the export surplus had flooded their markets and threatened the livelihoods of local farmers. The curbs have set the group on a collision course with Brussels while at the same time threatening the EU’s fragile solidarity in backing Ukraine’s fightback against Russia’s war of aggression.EU diplomats believe the import bans contravene both international and EU law — and will fail to achieve their goals.“Unilateral bans of individual countries won’t solve anything,” Czech Minister of Agriculture Zdeněk Nekula said.“We must find agreement throughout the EU on the rules under which agricultural commodities will transit fro...

Governments are worried they will end up footing the bill for collapses in other countries. The proposals, due to be published on Tuesday, were described as “contentious” by one EU diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. The ensuing battle between the Commission and governments over the final shape of the legislation is likely to last months.A spate of banking failures in the U.S. has thrust the terror of bank runs and financial contagion from panicking depositors back into the spotlight. Despite that, the Commission isn’t going to find it easy to toughen up the EU’s regime. It’s just th...
