Dear Amy: My niece lives 10 states away and is getting married. Her invitation stated that my 17-year-old son was invited only to the wedding ceremony — not the reception.I told her that we would not be spending thousands of dollars (flights, hotel, rental car, gifts) for a 15-minute ceremony. Her response was, “You can come, and he can sit in the hotel.”I said that we were still not coming. And (I told her), “By the way — that was so rude.”Now her parents are angry, and others in the family are weighing in.We’re still not going to this wedding, as I am still not going to make my son sit in a motel room. How do I make this situation better?— Irate Aunt in MDDear Irate: You state that you want to make this situation better, but you don’t outline your definition of “better.”Might I suggest an afternoon at Six Flags?Related ArticlesAsk Amy | Ask Amy: Parents refuse to recognize gay relationship Ask Amy | Ask Amy: Real estate agent won’t stop co...NATO extend boss Stoltenberg's term

NATO members agreed on Tuesday (4 July) to extend the term of Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg for a further year. The decision has been widely signaled in recent weeks but ambassadors to NATO are expected to formally approve the extension during a meeting on Tuesday, said the diplomats, who spoke on Monday (3 July) on condition of anonymity.Stoltenberg has guided the North Atlantic Treaty Organization through a series of crises since taking charge in 2014, most recently rallying NATO members in support of Ukraine while seeking to prevent the war there from escalating into a direct conflict between NATO and Russia.Stoltenberg, 64, is a former prime minister of Norway. He was due to complete his term as the top civilian at the transatlantic security alliance at the end of September but is now likely to stay on for a further 12 months.Stoltenberg said in February he was not seeking an extension to his contract. This week’s deals have treated declarer’s play when he must choose among two or more finesses. It’s better to try everything — combine your chances — than to rely on a single chance.Cover the East-West cards. West leads the jack of spades against four hearts. How will you try for 10 tricks?Say you win the first spade and draw trumps. At IMP scoring, take the best play for the contract. You can finesse in diamonds by leading to the jack, but only after taking the K-A. You guard against a doubleton queen with East.OVERTRICKWhen the queen falls, you can finesse in clubs for an overtrick. If East’s diamonds were Q-10-9-8, you would finesse in clubs. At matchpoint duplicate, your play would be different. The contract is “normal” — every pair will reach four hearts — so you would try for the maximum number of tricks: You would take the ace of diamonds and lead to the jack. If the cards lay perfectly, you would make two overtricks,...Price Controls: An Inflation Solution That Doesn’t Screw Workers

Centrist and right-wing economists continue to advocate for laying off workers and engineering a recession to address inflation. But why not set commodity price controls instead? This week on Deconstructed, Ryan Grim is joined by James K. Galbraith, a professor of government and business relations at the University of Texas at Austin. Galbraith has an extensive history of working in government, including as executive director of the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress and an economist for the House Banking Committee. Galbraith and Grim discuss the implementation of price controls by the U.S. government, how it brings down prices, how the Biden administration has used it and could use it more, and how Galbraith’s father — economist and politician John Kenneth Galbraith — was instrumental in setting commodity price controls during the post-World War II era.Transcript coming soon.

Happy Friday, South Florida!Hopefully everyone has had a great holiday week! Friday is finally here and conditions across South Florida remained the same through the entire week. Warm and muggy conditions in the morning have given way to steamy conditions each afternoon, as our feels-like temperatures have soared well into the triple digits. On Thursday, a few areas saw showers and thunderstorms, however, many areas also simply remained steamy through a big chunk of the day. This morning there were showers and thunderstorms over the Florida Bay lifting northward away from the Florida Keys but the storms fizzled before affecting any land areas.Unlike yesterday’s steering pattern out of the South, the weather pattern for South Florida will begin to change starting today. The wind direction across South Florida will veer out of the Southwest, which means showers and thunderstorms will favor the East Coast metro during the afternoon. With a warm Southwest wind flow in place, very...Latest news
